What to know about Canada’s immigration plan to get ‘top talent from around the world’

Canada’s digital nomad visa aims to convince travel enthusiasts that the country is an ideal destination, offers easy entry and invaluable social benefit

Although Thailand recently announced its “Destination Thailand Visa,” a five-year visa for remote workers, the work arrangement is not new in Canada as the country announced its own program to attract “top talent from around the world” last year.

The government aims to convince digital nomads that Canada is an ideal destination and offers applicants easy entry and invaluable social benefits, such as access to employers and investors, a diverse culture, education, and more, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) website.

Popular travel destinations have introduced such visas to capitalize on workers who prefer to combine travel and recreation with remote work. Additionally, more countries are introducing similar programs in hopes of restoring their local economies.

But amid housing and affordability crises, is Canada the top choice for these workers?

How does this immigration process measure up to Canada’s new outlook on immigration? And what is a digital nomad, anyway? Here’s what to know.

What is a digital nomad?

The nomad lifestyle is often marked by a high level of flexibility and mobility, as per financial news website Investopedia. Digital nomads, by extension, use technology to work from anywhere outside their homes. They are known to explore new places and cultures while still taking care of their professional responsibilities.

In 2023, 35 million people worldwide described themselves as digital nomads, according to Think Remote, a media company focused on remote work.
